St. Bernard parish, Watertown, Wisconsin

Watertown is about thirty miles west of Milwaukee.  When this story first appeared last year, one report said that the misuse of parish funds came to light when bills went unpaid.  Another story said that parish laity looked at the books and reported the problem to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.  However, the now-former pastor of St. Bernard's parish, not only took parish funds and placed them in a Nigerian get-rich-quick scheme, but somehow persuaded some parishioners to do likewise.  The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel account of 2.23.2011 gives an extensive summary, and it is linked here.

The two articles report different jail terms: 6 months in the J-S, 9 months in the WDT.  Also, the Watertown paper calls the defendant "a former priest," rather than a priest formerly at St. Bernard's.  The restitution amount seems to be about $170,000 total.
